So who really likes service stations and roadside public conveniences? Not me.
That’s why I wanted to share some recommendations with you all – I truly believe that journeys can be thoroughly enjoyed, not just endured. Come off the road, usually not far, and you can experience something local, something delicious and something fun. Plan ahead, take the Pitstop recommendations with you, and enjoy an amazing straight-from-the-farm bacon sandwich, a barista-made flat white or a fluffy oven-fresh scone just moments off your route.
As a mum of two, I have to admit that journeys were becoming a little intimidating, until I started to embrace them. You will be surprised how great children’s menus, kids playgrounds, indoor play centres, cute farms and much more can be found within a stone’s throw of our main national routes.
Summer holidays have also taken a twist for us.... no more planes, lots more boats and trains. Instead of struggling through the journey on one of August’s ‘black Saturdays’ on the roads in France, do as we do - try a stop-off overnight in somewhere other than an ever so slightly grubby motel. Put the children to bed and retire to the dining room where so many Chambre d’hotes (French B&B’s) will serve you an amazing, local, organic dinner on your plate and locally produced wines in your glass. Then continue on the Autoroute the next day.
The other option is to hit the ‘Near Me’ on the Homepage during your journey and all the Pillows & Pitstops near you will appear
Pillows & Pitstops features hundreds of recommendations, mostly off the main routes on which you might find yourselves. But these are my recommendations, so what about yours? This fun website needs you. Let me know your experiences and favourite haunts. It’s so important and I can’t wait to discover them from you!
I must admit though – they won’t necessarily make it onto the website, as recommendations do need to fit some criteria to ensure you are getting that certain level of Pillow & Pitstop you need. I would hate you to turn up to a real dive.
